The Best Churro Cake with a protein cake, protein chocolate filling and protein frosting. Protein churro cake is low sugar, low fat and actually easy to make!

Jump to Recipe

After that Oreo Red Velvet Poke Cake did so well, I really wanted to make another one. Where the churro flavor came from? I have no idea! But okay come on – the churro + chocolate sauce combination goes so well, this cake is definitely going to be a hit among everyone!

Need more reasons to make this churro poke cake? It’s high protein, low sugar, low fat, and all-round just fabulous!

Ingredients for the Best Churro Cake Recipe!

With this set of ingredients, this recipe really makes the best ever churro cake! It’s healthy with whole wheat pastry flour, protein powder and applesauce instead of regular flour, sugar and butter.

  • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
  • Whey-Casein Vanilla Protein Powder to replace the ‘sugar’.
I used half Quest Nutrition and half Flex brand Vanilla protein powder..
  • Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe. I used a whey-casein blend from Quest Nutrition.
  • Coconut Flour
  • Cinnamon Powder
  • Hot Water
  • Unsweetened Applesauce
  • Some Lemon Juice
  • A bit of Melted Butter
  • Baking Soda

Protein Pudding for Churro Poke Cake

  • Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • Chocolate Protein Powder Quest Nutrition again here
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

The Chocolate Frosting and Cinnamon Sugar Topping for Churro Cake

  • Non-fat Plain Greek Yogurt
  • Chocolate Protein Powder – I used whey-casein from Quest.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar-free;  (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here)
  • Cinnamon

How to make Protein Churro Cake Recipe

The best part of this churro cake recipe with protein powder is that it’s super easy to make:

Preheat and Prep:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8” cake pan with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, vanilla protein powder, unflavored protein powder, coconut flour, cinnamon and baking soda until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients:

In another bowl, mix together the hot tea, applesauce, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Create Batter:

Gently whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a thick batter forms.

Bake to Perfection:

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.

Bake for 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Filling:

Make the holes:
WHEN CAKE IS STILL HOT,  Poke holes in cake (use rounded end of spoon/spatula) not too close or too far – 1” ish apart.

Filling:
Whisk milk, chocolate protein powder and cocoa powder in a bowl.

Pour filing into holes immediately.

Chill:

Place in fridge for 4 hours to chill.

Frost:

Whisk softened cream cheese and yogurt in a bowl.
Add protein powder and mix.

Spread on top of loaf cake and slice into 8 delectable portions.

Frosting:

Make frosting: Whisk yogurt, protein powder and cocoa powder in a bowl.

Don’t add too much yogurt in the topping; It will come together; Just continue to mix.

Spread frosting on cake and slice into 8 portions.

How to store Chocolate Churro Cake

This chocolate churro cake is a real gem of a recipe, and keeps as a great dessert or post-workout meal prep.

This churro poke cake has a Greek yogurt topping and can only be kept on the countertop for a couple of hours.
Store healthy chocolate churro cake in an airtight container in the fridge for upto 4 days or freezer for 2-3 months. Thaw frozen cake before eating.

Alternate Options for Healthy Churro Cake Recipe with Protein Powder

For the perfect healthy churro cake recipe, I would highly suggest using the protein powder and ingredients recommended, but here’s some alternatives:

  • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: Use All purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour in the same amount by weight, not cups.
  • Unflavored Protein Powder: Use 2 tablespoon flour
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Mashed Banana or Pumpkin Puree
  • Melted Butter: Melted Coconut Oil or Dairy Free Butter
  • Lemon Juice: Apple Cider Vinegar or White Vinegar

Chocolate Pudding:

  • Almond Milk: Regular Milk

Frosting and Topping Options:

  • Greek Yogurt: Coconut Yogurt
  • Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar or coconut sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
