Okay this was a total fluke, but SUCH a good one.

I actually planned on making protein popcorn cups adapted from a recipe I saw on IG, but swapped out the coconut oil for almond butter and this happened.

The mixture was supposed to be more runny so it would hold the popcorn together, but that never happened. I got something more crumbly, but SO good.

Think chunks of high protein dark chocolate while munching on chocolate protein popcorn.

How can I doctor up popcorn?

If you ever asked yourself this question, this adding something of a chocolate protein seasoning on popcorn with this recipe is a great way to add some flavor and nutrition boost!

Ingredients for Chocolate Protein Popcorn and Crumble!

The ingredient list for high protein chocolate popcorn is really simple – just a few pantry staples that you can totally customize too! I’ve got alternatives below if you need them.

  • Cooked Popcorn
  • Sugar free Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate – I use ones from Lakanto here (HAYLSKITCHEN gets you a discount). Lily’s is another sugar-free option.
  • Chocolate Protein Powder – this is what makes it high protein protein popcorn recipe. I’ve made some recommendations below.
  • Crunchy Almond Butter – I used American Dream Butter my Cookie flavor, but regular crunchy will work too
  • Maple Syrup – I used a naturally (monk fruit) sweetened sugar free one from Lakanto here.
  • Coconut Oil – Just a bit

What Protein Powder to use for Protein Popcorn Seasoning ?

For this particular recipe, I used the Chocolate Whey Protein Powder from Naked Nutrition; It’s grass fed and a clean product with low sugar.

Another great option for the same nutrition value but with added vitamins, minerals and a thermogenic blend for weightloss is ProteinWorld Slender Blend. Use my code HAYLSKITCHEN to get 30% off your order.

For a more sugar-free and lower carb option, I would also recommend  ProteinWorld Whey Protein Powder in the Chocolate flavor (same discount code here too);
Quest Nutrition Chocolate is another I use in my protein recipes; This is a sweeter whey-caesin blend.

How to make Chocolate Covered Protein Popcorn

Believe it or not, this chocolate popcorn might just be one of the easiest recipes you find on here; All you need to do is melt the chocolate and then mix in all the other ingredients in turn.

  1. Melt Chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave on high for about 30-45 seconds, stirring every now and then. Or use the double boiler method.
  1. Let the chocolate cool a bit.
  1. Add in the other ingredients, one at a time, stirring after each: almond butter, chocolate protein powder, maple syrup.
You should have a thick dry mix.
  1. Use hands to crumble.
  1. Add popcorn and toss well.

Can you Store Melted Chocolate Popcorn Recipe?

Yes, you can store homemade protein chocolate popcorn, but you need to keep it in the fridge. Place the popcorn in an airtight container and it will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Trust me, it’s going to be hard to have any leftovers from this recipe, but if you track macros or calories like I do, you might want to keep some servings of this for the next day.

Tips for the Best Protein Popcorn!

Chocolate covered protein popcorn really is easy to make, but here’s some things to make note of:

  1. Let the chocolate cool before adding the remaining ingredients; This prevents the mix from hardening too soon.
  1. Use room temperature runny nut butter; Cold and hard version will not mix well.
  1. Stir vigorously to prevent a lumpy consistency; You should have a uniform mass at the end and easily crumble it.

Alternatives for Healthy Popcorn Recipe

This healthy protein dessert or snack is quite customizable to fit your needs;

  • Replace dark chocolate with semi sweet or milk or even white chocolate; Vegan or dairy free chocolate works too.
  • Butter or plain vegetable oil in place of coconut oil
  • Any other nut or seed butter (peanut butter, cashew butter or tahini) can be used to replace almond butter
  • Honey in place of maple syrup (but this won’t be sugar-free or Vegan)
