Soft, light and fluffy, these are the best Chocolate Protein Cake Bars you can make! This dark chocolate protein powder cake bar recipe uses a lot of cocoa powder, Greek Yogurt and has no oil, eggs or sugar either!

I was going for brownies, but ended up with this. What a good accident.

These cake bars were SO soft you guys!

And SO SO SO freaking RICH!

I just cannot!

Ingredients for Chocolate Protein Cake Bars

These chocolate protein cake bars are made with gluten free flour, uses cocoa powder and is sweetened with chocolate protein powder. No sugar and no eggs here for a low calorie oatmeal brownie!

  • Gluten Free (All Purpose) Baking Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
  • Chocolate Protein Powder needed for high protein brownies and also replaces most of the ‘sugar’. I used half Chocolate Milkshake protein powder from Quest Nutrition, and half Protein World Whey for this recipe.
    Code HAYLSKITCHEN gives a discount on ProteinWorld;
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free;  (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here)
  • Non-fat Greek Yogurt contributes to the oil-free part of these high protein brownies since it adds the moisture, and also extra protein
  • Almond Milk or regular milk
  • Almond Butter
  • Baking Soda

And for the mix-in and topping:

  • Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal

Or: Other cereal, nuts, dried fruit, granola, chocolate chips.

Tips for Best Chocolate Protein Powder Cake Bar Recipe

  • Use room temperature milk and yogurt;
This is so the wet ingredients and dry ingredients can mix well to give the perfect oatmeal fudge brownies.
  • Use Creamy Almond Butter also so that it mixes well into the batter
  • Don’t over-mix the batter!
Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them.
If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the low calorie cake bars tough, dense and gummy.
  • Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy chocolate cake bars.
  • Don’t over-bake the cake bars or they might get tough; Remove when the tester/knife comes out just dry; Little moisture is okay.

How to store Protein Cake Bar Recipe?

This high protein cake bar recipe keeps well for a meal prep breakfast, dessert or post workout snack; Freezer friendly too!

Store healthy protein powder cake bars at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week.

To freeze the best chocolate protein bar recipe, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months.

Alternatives for Healthy Chocolate Cake Bars without Eggs

For the perfect low fat but moist high protein healthy chocolate cake bars, I would highly suggest using the ingredients and brands I recommended; I do have some alternatives you can try. I haven’t testing them all, so I can’t say how your recipe might turn out.

  • 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour: All purpose flour or Whole Wheat Pastry Flour in the same amount by weight not cups
  • Greek Yogurt: Coconut Yogurt
  • Almond Milk: Any other milk
  • 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar or coconut sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
  • Almond Butter: Peanut Butter Butter, Cashew Butter or any nut or seed butter.

To make Vegan Chocolate Cake Bars

For a Vegan chocolate protein cake bar recipe, use coconut yogurt in place of Greek Yogurt and a plant based protein powder.

ProteinWorld has a Vegan protein blend that could work well here (HAYLSKITCHEN for the discount here too).

I haven’t tried pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work.
