Replies to an Insta story question a while ago said you guys wanted funky protein shake ideas, so here’s one!

Little secret though: I didn’t actually have the Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream to compare this with. But considering that’s a banana flavored ice cream and has walnuts and fudge, I think this is pretty close.

I guess there isn’t any fudge in here, but I think I’d prefer chocolate chips or chunks over fudge. All for that crunch!

A thick and creamy breakfast banana protein shake made with collagen peptides and yogurt and without protein powder and milk.

Ingredients for this Chunky Monkey Protein Smoothie with Yogurt

  • Banana
  • Non-fat Greek Yogurt
  • Collagen Powder – I used Vital Proteins’ unflavored
  • Maple Syrup – I would recommend a stevia sweetened one like Sweetleaf Stevia, or Monk Fruit based from Lakanto.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Ice Cubes – I’d say optional, but it really makes for a thicker shake

And of course to make it a chunky monkey flavored drink, top it with some chopped walnuts and chocolate chunks.

How to make this Protein Shake with Collagen Peptides Powder

Chop or slice and freeze the banana for about an hour or so. You could potentially use a fresh one, but the shake really won’t be as thick.

Then just blend all the protein milkshake ingredients – frozen banana, yogurt, collagen, vanilla, maple syrup and ice – in a blender or food processor. A protein milkshake without any ice cream!

Oh and of course the most important step: slurp it down!

Try this chunky monkey banana protein smoothie made with frozen banana, yogurt and collagen instead of protein powder for a drink that tastes just like the ice cream!

Some alternate ingredients for this Healthy Breakfast Banana Shake

  • Coconut Yogurt – For a Vegan, Paleo and dairy free option. It won’t have as much protein and a little more fat, but just as thick an creamy.
  • Vanilla Protein Powder – Use this in place of the collagen, but don’t add the vanilla extract; Also reduce the sweetener. May be even leave it out since most protein powders are sweet enough, and the shake might get too sweet with the banana.
  • Honey – As a substitute for the maple syrup. The shake won’t be Vegan anymore though.
Make this healthy frozen banana milkshake topped with walnuts and chocolate using coconut yogurt, without ice cream, and no peanuts or peanut butter for a sugar free, vegan and paleo friendly protein shake.

Tips for a thick Ice Cream Protein Shake

  • Make sure you freeze the bananas completely before using them. It not only makes the drink think, but creamy too. Kinda like a nice cream shake.
  • Don’t skip on the yogurt. It adds a bunch of protein, but also makes the shake a little thicker and more filling too.
  • Use the ice – no milk! The more ice you add, the thicker the shake will be. Don’t add too much though, or it will dilute the flavor.
  • Use a high-speed blender with sharp blades so all that ice gets completely crushed!

What makes this a healthy ice cream protein shake?

  • Made without milk
