Are bagels a good source of protein?

On average, a normal bagel has over 250 calories and 9g of protein, but this protein bagel recipe is a great source of protein with under 150 calories and 13g protein!

Serving size here can definitely be 2!

Ingredients for High Protein Bagels Recipe

This high protein bagel recipe uses the 2 ingredient weight watchers dough concept with simple and healthy ingredients..

  • Gluten Free (All Purpose) Baking Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
  • Vanilla Protein Powder to add some sweetness. This is the replacement for sugar. I use the whey-caesin blend from Quest.
  • Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly low carb high protein bagel. Quest Nutrition again here.
  • Non-fat Greek Yogurt another protein-packed ingredient
  • Baking Powder
  • Some Cinnamon

And for the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

  • Egg Wash
  • 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free;  (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here).
  • More Cinnamon

What Protein Powder to use for Protein Packed Bagels

For the best protein packed bagels, I recommend using a whey-caesin blend, so the bagels don’t dry out. For this recipe, I used the multipurpose mix and Vanilla flavor from Quest Nutrition.

I haven’t tried just Whey protein, pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work here.

Tips for making Protein Powder Bagels

This recipe for vanilla protein powder bagels is really easy, but here’s some pointers to make sure you get it right:

  • Mix all dry ingredients first, then add yogurt.
  • Use cold yogurt so that the dough is cold and rises well.
  • Add all yogurt at once and mix.
  • Don’t over-mix the dough or over-knead or it will get too warm and make dense scones.
  • Don’t let dough sit out for too long; Work quickly; You don’t want the dough to get warm and hard to handle.

How to store Homemade Dessert Bagel Recipe

These homemade protein bagels are best had fresh, but can be stored on the countertop or the freezer for a meal prep breakfast or dessert.

To store Quest protein powder bagels on the countertop, let them cool completely and then put them in a sealed plastic bag; They should keep for 1-3 days.

To freeze bagels, let the bagels cool completely then place in freezer-safe zipper bags and freeze immediately; They’re perfectly freezer friendly will stay fresh for even 2-3 months.
Thaw your frozen bagels and them serve.

Alternatives for Healthy Bagels for Weightloss

The ingredients – and brands – I used make amazing high protein healthy bagels for weightloss that are sugar free and lower in carbs too.

Here’s some other options you can try, but I haven’t given them all a try yet, so I’mnot sure how they would all work together.

  • 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour: All purpose flour or Whole Wheat Pastry Flour in the same amount by weight not cups
  • Unflavored Protein Powder: More Plain flour, but reduce the amount of yogurt to ¾ cup
  • Unsweetened Greek Yogurt: Vanilla greek yogurt, but try to keep it light.
Coconut yogurt could be an option.
