Let's be honest: Muddy Buddies (or Puppy Chow, depending on where you grew up) are unrivaled in the world of easy, crowd-pleasing snacks. I actually saw this one from my blogger friend Chahinez and I was very convinced!

Standard recipes though, are usually loaded with excessive sugar, and if you want to make them festive for Valentine's Day, you're typically stuck using artificial red food dyes or colorful candy melts that don't taste great.

Not today. This year, we are upgrading the classic into a healthy valentines puppy chow.

These Healthy Pink Muddy Buddies are the perfect Valentine's Day treat. They get their vibrant pink color and intense berry flavor completely naturally from freeze-dried strawberries. What's even better is that, we've swapped out much of the powdered sugar for protein powder and zero calorie powdered, making this a snack not just cute, but also guilt-free 🙂
It honestly tastes like a Strawberry Shortcake Puppy Chow recipe!

Why You'll Love This "Better-For-You" Pink Puppy Chow

If you are looking for a fun V Day treat that won't leave you with a massive sugar crash, this pink muddy buddy recipe is it.

  • No Artificial Dyes: The pink color comes 100% from real strawberries, making these naturally colored healthy muddy buddies safe for everyone.
  • High Protein Boost: It's not an empty-calorie snack, but Valentine's protein puppy chow with the vanilla and unflavored protein powder!
  • Real Fruit Flavor: From those freeze-dried strawberries!
  • Gluten-Free Friendly: As long as you use Rice or Corn Chex, this recipe is naturally gluten-free.

Ingredients (and Substitutions) for Healthy Pink Muddy Buddies

The magic of this V day muddy buddy recipe lies in the freeze dried strawberries in "pink dust" coating, and no red color in the chocolate. Here is what you need:

  • Rice Chex Cereal: The classic base. You can also use Corn Chex or other Chex..
    • Note: Ensure your box specifically says "Gluten-Free" if serving to celiacs.
  • High Protein Cereal: I use the Honey Graham flavor from Catalina Crunch.
    • Substitution: Magic Spoon Cereal, Seven Sundays Honey, Cheerios, more Chex cereal or any other cereal.
  • White Chocolate Chips: I use this one from Lily's. You need a quality white chocolate that melts smoothly.
    • Substitution: Dairy-free white chocolate chips work perfectly here if needed.
  • Vanilla Whey & Unflavored Whey Protein Powder: This recipe uses protein in the wet mix and the dry mix, and serves as the substitute for sugar. I recommend the vanilla whey from Legion or 1UP Nutrition, and unflavored whey from Isopure.
    • Note: Make sure you use a vanilla protein powder that is sweet and whose taste you enjoy because this will determine how the final dish tastes.
    • Substitute: Use plant-based protein powder, but make sure to taste the mixture and add vanilla extract and/or stevia sweetener as needed.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter: This helps the chocolate melt and adds that classic flavor.
    • Substitution: Almond butter or cashew butter work great. For a nut-free school safe version, use sunflower seed butter or Tahini.
  • Coconut Oil: Just a bit to help thinned out the melted chocolate mixture so it coats the cereal evenly without breaking it.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk: Because we are adding protein powder directly into the wet coating, we need a little liquid to turn it into a creamy ganache rather than a thick paste.
    • Note: Make sure it is at room temperature so it doesn't harden the chocolate!
    • Substitution: Use soy milk, cashew milk or any other non-dairy or dairy milk.

The "Pink Protein Dust" Coating

This is where we deviate from the traditional recipe to add nutrition and color.

  • Freeze-Dried Strawberries: Crucial! Do not use fresh or frozen strawberries; they will turn your cereal soggy instantly. Freeze-dried fruit is crunchy and has had all moisture removed.
  • Protein Powder: A vanilla or strawberry-flavored whey isolate works easiest; The same one as before: Legion or 1UP Nutrition.
  • Powdered 0 calorie sweetener Sugar: For the classic powdery look. This one from Lakanto is the one I use.
    • Substitution: Use regular powdered sugar, but it will increase the calorires and sugar.

Add-ins:

  • Festive M&M s or sprinkles for extra holiday flair!

How to Make Naturally Colored Pink Muddy Buddies

This recipe comes together in about 15 minutes!

Step 1: Create the Strawberry Protein Dust

  • Place your freeze-dried strawberries into a food processor or high-speed blender. Pulse until they become a fine powder.
  • Pour the mixture into a large gallon-sized Ziploc bag.
  • Add the protein powder and powdered sugar to the bag, seal and shake until fully combined and uniform in color.

Step 2: Melt the Coatings

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 20-second increments, stirring aggressively in between, until completely smooth.
Tip: Do not overheat or the chocolate will burn.
  • Add in peanut butter, almond milk, vanilla and unflavored protein powders and mix until completely smooth.

Step 3: Coat the Cereal

  • Place the chex and high protein cereal in a very large mixing bowl.
  • Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Use a large spatula to gently fold the cereal until every piece is evenly coated. Try not to crush the cereal pieces.

Step 4: The Shake

  • Immediately transfer the coated cereal into the Ziploc bag containing the strawberry protein dust.
Tip: Seal the bag tightly, trapping some air inside so the cereal can move freely.
  • Shake vigorously until the cereal is coated in the pink powder and separated.

Step 5: Set and Serve

  • Spread the healthy strawberry puppy chow on a baking sheet lined and place in the freezer for about 20 minutes.
  • Top with festive M&Ms and sprinkles before serving!

Storage for High Protein Valentine's Muddy Buddies:

This pink puppy chow recipe is a lovely high protein snack prep if you're feeling the love any time of year

Fridge: Store healthy Valentine's Day puppy chow in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Keeping it cool helps the protein-chocolate coating stay firm and crunchy.

Freezer: I recommend keeping in freezer-safe bag (for up to 3 months) for extra crunch.
