To be honest I did not know white hot chocolate was a thing until I started looked up ‘unite hot chocolate recipes’ to get some inspiration for my collection.

But why stop there. To make my recipe even more unique, I decided to add protein powder!

Another big reason behind that was so that I wouldn’t have to add A TON of chocolate like the usual versions since it also came with a high fat and calorie value.

Very good move here!

What is a white hot chocolate?

I like to think of White hot chocolate as a ‘chocolate free’ hot chocolate since it doesn’t have any cocoa powder or regular milk or dark chocolate in there.

What is it made of?

The basic recipe out there calls for just milk, a ton of white chocolate, and some vanilla extract for flavor.

But this version is fairly healthier.

Ingredients for Healthy Homeade White Hot Chocolate with Protein Powder

This healthy protein hot chocolate recipe uses protien powder to replace some of the chocolate and the vanilla.

  • Unsweetened Almond Milk or any other non dairy or regular milk
  • Water – you could use more milk here, but even the water makes it creamy because of the protein powder
  • White Chocolate – either the chips or a chopped bar. I recommend using the one from Lily’s for a sugar free and healthy recipe.
  • Vanilla protein powder to add the creaminess without having to add as much chocolate. This makes a fairly low calorie recipe and also sugar free if your protein powder is sweetened with a zero calorie sweetener like stevia.
I used the Vanilla from Quest Nutrition.

To make a Vegan white hot chocolate, use Vegan white chocolate and a suitable protein powder.

The recipe for Vanilla Protein Powder Hot Chocolate:

This homemade White hot chocolate with protein powder is really easy to make.

All you need to do here is whisk and heat up the milk and water in a small pot over medium heat.

Let the milk start to simmer – but not boil – and then stir or whisk in the chopped white chocolate.

Remove the chocolate milk from the heat.

Then add in your vanilla protein powder and vigorously whisk.

Pour it into your mug and indulge in what is basically a hot protein shake!

How to make White Hot Chocolate in the Microwave

Making this white hot chocolate in the microwave is even easier than the stovetop method, since you just need to heat the liquid and then combine it with the protein powder and chocolate.

You want to follow the same order of steps here:

  1. Microwave the milk and water until its hot
  2. Add in the white chocolate and stir or whisk until it melts
  3. Then add in the protein powder and whisk

Can you add protein powder to hot drinks?

Adding protein powder to hot drinks can be very tricky because it tends to immediately form clumps, but it definitely possible if you use the following tips.

Tips for the Perfect Protein Powder Hot Chocolate:

  1. Use just hot, steaming liquid – not boiling hot.
This is a lot more difficult to handle.
  1. Don’t add the protein powder when hot liquid is still on the stove.
The protein powder will stick to the bottom and burn. Make sure you remove from heat before adding the protein powder, or better yet just heat your drink in the microwave.
  1. Whisk vigorously when adding protein powder to the hot liquid.
The whisking is required so that the protein powder does not clump.
  1. Use a whisk! This will not work with just a spoon, you need a whisk here.
